Why 'Solstice'?

The Naming Gauntlet

Naming a youth soccer movement is harder than naming a startup. The name has to work in English and Spanish (at minimum), sound like a proper football club, have no conflicts with gambling companies (sports betting is everywhere), and carry a philosophy without needing a footnote.

We evaluated 25+ candidates. Most died fast.

The Graveyard

Meridian was the early favorite. Geographic ambition, Latin root that travels perfectly across Romance languages, sounds like a Champions League club. Then we found Meridianbet — a sports betting company operating in 30+ countries with 100+ club sponsorships. Dead.

Workshop had the best philosophy. Building things, craftsmanship, the open source ethos. Arsenal started as Dial Square — a workshop. But "The Workshop" is an 800-employee online gambling company. And the /w/ and /sh/ sounds don't exist in Spanish. Dead.

Forge — Forge FC already exists in the Canadian Premier League. Four-time champions. Dead.

Craft — Craft Sportswear is a major athletic brand in soccer. Dead.

Crisol (Spanish for "crucible") — beautiful word, perfect metaphor, chants well. But I'm a white guy from San Diego. Naming my movement with a Spanish word I don't natively speak felt like reaching. Dead by authenticity.

Common — "common" also means "ordinary." You'd spend forever explaining "no, not THAT kind of common." Dead by double meaning.

Why Solstice Survived

Solstice — Latin solstitium, "the sun stands still." The turning point. The moment the longest night ends and the light starts coming back.

It survived every filter:

  • Cross-language: Direct cognate in Spanish (solsticio), French (solstice — identical spelling), Portuguese (solstício), Italian (solstizio). German speakers recognize it as a Latin loanword. Clean transliteration in Arabic, Japanese, Chinese.
  • Pronunciation: No /w/, no /ʃ/, no /θ/. Spanish speakers say it without friction.
  • Chantability: Two syllables. "SOL-STICE!" Same energy as "BAR-ÇA!" or "JU-VE!"
  • Brand conflicts: Zero soccer clubs. Zero sports teams. Zero gambling companies.
  • Negative connotations: None in any language researched.

And the narrative fits. US youth soccer is in its longest night — fragmented, expensive, opaque. Solstice FC is the turning point.

FC, not SC

We debated FC (Football Club) vs. SC (Sporting Club). SC enables broader expansion into futsal, beach soccer, other sports. But soccer is the mission right now. FC is the universal identifier in global soccer — every country, every level. And "Solstice FC" just sounds right.

The expansion path is there when we're ready. But you have to earn it.
